Electronic Aids to Daily Living (EADL's)


Also known as ECU (Environmental Control Unit). These are a means to interact and manipulate one or more electronic appliance as: a television, radio, CD player, lights, and fan etc. This is accomplished using voice activation, switch access, a computer interface, and adaptations such as X-10 units.

A controller of a powered wheelchair can be interfaced for accessing electronic appliances.

Controlling electronic devices is usually with ultrasound, infrared, AC wiring throughout the house, and radio frequency.

The Call Bell Switch activated Call Bell, by Tash Inc is an inexpensive, and small battery operated alarm. When Bell is activated, will emit a distinctive two tone chime. The Call Bell can be operated by direct access, a single switch or remotely with an Ultra One package.

Eyegaze. The Eyegaze Communication System is an FDA- approved electronic aid ( EADL) for daily communication and control for people with complex physical disabilities. The system is operated entirely with the eyes. By looking at control keys displayed on a screen, a person can synthesize speech, control his environment (lights, call bells, etc.), type, run computer software, operate a computer mouse, and access the Internet and e-mail.
